Businessman Rajendra Shanghani recently testified in court regarding a disturbing encounter with debt collector Samuel Brian Yongo Otumba, during which he recorded Yongo making threats against his life.

Appearing before Magistrate Peter Mutai, Rajendra recounted how Yongo not only threatened to kill him but also claimed that even the then-Governor Mike Sonko would be unable to assist him in this dire situation. To substantiate his claims, Rajendra produced a recording made on his iPhone 16, in which Yongo warned him to remain indoors, stating that he was coming for him.

During the proceedings, videos of the alleged threats were presented in court, prompting Yongo to assert that he had been contracted to collect debts on Rajendra’s behalf. He demanded that Rajendra explain the circumstances that led to the threats being recorded.

In a tense cross-examination, Yongo, who was representing himself, pressed Rajendra to recount the events of April 12, 2024, the day he claims to have been assaulted. Rajendra described how their initial conversation had been amicable but quickly escalated into menacing threats, including a demand for money that Yongo allegedly failed to return.

He expressed his fear for his life, citing Yongo’s explicit threats to shoot him. Yongo faces serious charges, including threats to kill another businessman, specifically targeting Rajendra Shanghani in the Park Land area of Wetlands sub-county.

The first count against him involves making violent threats on April 12, 2024, during which he reportedly hurled abusive language before issuing a death threat. Additionally, he is charged with cyber-crime, computer misuse, and harassment for sending a threatening message to Rajendra via WhatsApp.

The prosecution argued that Yongo’s text was likely to instill fear and apprehension of violence in the complainant. Following the hearing, Yongo was released on a bond of Sh 200,000, with the option of providing a contact person or an alternative bond of Sh 100,000. The case continues to unfold, with Yongo being linked to Neptune Credit Management Limited, a company that specializes in debt recovery for creditors.
